Bodega Y Vinedos O. Fournier - Spain

This Spanish estate covers 105ha in the municipality of Berlangas de Roa y Roa de Duero in the province of Burgos in the Ribera del Duero area of Castilla y Leon.  The vineyards date back to 1946, but the present winery was built in 1979 – several years before the introduction of the Ribero del Duero DOC in 1982. Here you will find some of Spain’s finest wines.

In 2002 the property was obtained by the O. Fournier Group, which also has vineyards in Argentina and Chile.

The Ribera del Duero region benefits from a continental climate with an Atlantic influence and moderate rainfall, and the poor soils are predominantly rocky, calcareous, sandy and clay. The vineyards are located at an approximate altitude of between 700-800 metres above sea level, and this produces an extreme diurnal variation - helping to produce wines with excellent colour, structure and acidity, eminently suitable for aging in oak. The rigours of this harsh climate also make for low yields but high quality grapes.

  1. Fournier are pioneers in Spain because they do not bottle their wines according to the conventional Spanish aging laws of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva – they bottle when they feel the time is right, and the wines are at their best -this affords them more flexibility and control, and they are able to focus exclusively on the quality of their wines.

The entire estate is planted with Tinta del Pais, which is what they call Tempranillo in that region, and it’s the predominant variety there.
