USA

Wine has been produced in the country we now call the USA for hundreds of years, and it is thought that Huguenot settlers made the first wine in Florida in the early 1560’s from the indigenous grape Scuppernong. However, this variety does not belong to the Vitis Vinifera species of vine, from which almost all the wine we drink in the world today is produced. It belongs to the Vitus Labrusca species, and its unusual flavour - which is regarded as a rather peculiar “foxy” taste, was not popular! Thank goodness its signature grape variety these days is Zinfandel! The USA call their appellations AVA’s, or American Viticultural Areas, and are based on climate and geographical features. The first AVA was Augusta in Missouri in 1980. Wine is made in all 50 states of the USA, but the most important are California, Oregon and Washington.
