New Zealand

Known as Aotearoa, Maori for “the land of the long white cloud”, it was home to an elusive flightless bird, which has become a national icon, and everything about the country is now colloquially known as Kiwi. Situated on the edge of the world in the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand consists of two large landmasses and many smaller islands, and due to its remoteness, it was one of the last places to be settled by Europeans. A country of varied topography that enjoys a temperate maritime climate, no vineyard is more than 120km (80miles) from the ocean. It boasts the most southerly wine region in the world. Although viticulture goes back to colonial times, New Zealand is a latecomer to commercial wine producing, only getting into the game in the 1970’s. The grape variety that brought it to the attention of the rest of the world was, of course, Sauvignon Blanc!
